InerziaMySQL
MySQL is the well known database that we all can download and install on our Macs;
it comes in bundle with a System Preferences panel to start and stop the MySQL server
and even to check its state.
But with MacOS X.5 Leopard some standard locations have been changed; moreover, the
supplied control panel doesn't work for some reason. Starting and stopping the server can be
done with a Terminal command, but its string is long and difficult to remember.
A solution is to drag&drop into a Terminal window a text file with the command inside;
after having made this for a while... I decided to build a Dashboard widget that will substitute
the original preference pane.
When started, it requires an Administrator password (so requires the SQL server); this password,
for safety reasons, is not saved anywhere, so it will be required at each launch. Anyway, it is
maintained during the session, even if it is not showed. I suggest to keep this widget open until
you need it: it needs a minimal memory and no CPU load.
The effect of giving the password to the system is constrained only within the
time necessary to perform the MySQL command and after that it is forgotten. So if you leave the Mac
alone, noone can go to the Terminal and give commands as Administrator.
